I thought I would show you how I did it....
Do you want to know how?....
This is how the chairs looked when I bought them. I got them at Roberts Crafts and they were meant to be candle holders.....which I thought was a great idea.
I removed the votive cups and chose fabric to match each chair. I cut circles about 6 - 7 inches around.....

Can't you just see them all lit up on my backyard patio during a summer evening BBQ?
But when I saw them...I immediately thought that they would also make adorable pincushions.
I removed the votive cups and chose fabric to match each chair. I cut circles about 6 - 7 inches around.....
....and gathered the edges by hand using a running stitch.
I put some fiberfil inside the circle.....I used enough to make it firm enough for the pins but not so much that when I sewed the button in the center that it wouldn't "squish down".

I gathered the circle tighter....
...and then knotted it off several times.
I used hot glue and dabbed a little on each knot so that they would be secure and the circle would not come ungathered after lots of use or pressure from pins and such.
...and then knotted it off several times.

Next I hot glued some ric-rac around the edge of each circle.
While the ric-rac cooled....I stitched a button in the center of each circle using 2 strands of thread and a long needle.
I made several stitches to secure the button.

Lori ~ You are one very clever girl!
ReplyDeleteI am so thankful to already be a proud owner of one of your darling
pincushion chairs. I LOVE the thing to pieces!
I am going to call mine the ...
"Crusin Pincushion Chair" as it is going to be getting around. You will have to visit my blog to see what I mean by that.
Thanks so much for making me one and for giving us such a great tutorial so we can make them for others.
First I can't believe I'm only the second person to comment! How seriously frickin' adorable are these chairs...they remind me of something two lil grannies would sit on, on the porch, drinking tea and people watch......thanks for the tutorial!! a flippin' fantastic idea!!
ReplyDeleteOMGosh! These are so awesome...what a great twist on their original purpose...who'd a thunk it? (I like them as votive holders too). When I see small things like these I always think "Barbie"! She could invite the whole gang over for a retro inspired barbie-q :) How cute would these look with one of those paper cocktail umbrellas! So, anyhoo, I am already a follower through MyYahoo. Have a Happy, Safe & Relaxing 4th :)

ReplyDeleteLori! You are one creative girl! I would love to win one of these darling pin cushions, especially as I collect them. I may use your tutorial for a retreat gift in September.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I have to tell you that I am completely in love with your paper doll quilt since seeing it at shop hop. I can't wait for the pattern to come out! I am definitely going to do it. Have you ever thought of a way to make the appliques snap on, so that you could actually "play" with the quilt? I've been trying to work that out in my brain I thought of a separate set of clothes to go in a pouch on the back, or having the clothes snap on in place in the front, but I wouldn't want the pieces to go missing.
Anyhow, I'm thrilled to start it. Two months can't come soon enough!
Lined up for a parade
ReplyDelete*wave* howdy!
ReplyDeleteyour chair pincushions are great!

Those pincushions are so darn cute! I've been waiting to see where you found the chairs. I remember sitting in those style chairs all the time growing up. We ate burgers and mac salad in them while watching the fireworks. We also sat in them in the cold snowy winters. As kids we didn't care if it was cold out, we just loved those old metal chairs :)

Last but not least, I wrote up a note and linked to your cute pincushions on my blog.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, those are adorable! I'm a new follower.
ReplyDeleteI think the chairs are all set out for my Grandma's birthday party. Her birthday was on the 4th of July and the whole family would come to her house for a fish fry every year. They strung up a couple of big tarps for shade and had a bunch of these chairs and a couple of red picnic tables out there for everybody to sit at (or in) while they ate the 12 tons of food that people brought.
This is amazing and sew inspiring to me as a novice quilter. BEAUTIFUL!
ReplyDeleteOh holy cow!!!!, I love your adorable-extra cute- pincushions, I felt in love for them... <3, they look so cute all together, I have to say I have been your follower from a little while now, pssssssstttt I'd love to have one of the cutie patoties :*, lol, I'll make the other steps later on...
ReplyDeleteHi Lori, I have become a follower and have posted your tutorial on my blog.
ReplyDeleteI have to win one of your vintage chair pin cushions because I remember sitting in the exact chairs at my grandma's in Clearfield, Utah and watching cars go by at shift change from Hill Air Force Base. All of my cousins, sister, and some Aunt's. We would take turns and which ever car drove by when it was your turn, you got that car! We would actually be waiting for Grandpa to get off the bus at the corner. But it was a fun way to spend a couple of hours on a hot afternoon.
Please, please!!
Thanks, Sandy
I follow your blog. I love the pin cushion!!!! When I see it I think of my Grandmother's screened in front porch where she had chairs just like these. A university was across the street from her house and she would sit on that porch and watch the students going to class. I became on of those students when I got old enough and would see her sitting on the porch as I came back from class. Brings back a lot of fond memories!
ReplyDeleteLori, I would love to win your chair pincushion. I collect miniature chairs.

A fun tutorial Lori- I have you on my blog list and have enjoyed visiting your blog for quite a long time now. I am not sure if I am a follower but I can't see me to find your follower button.
ReplyDeleteI think your patio chairs are great- I remember a show from my childhood called "The friendly giant" The giant had 3 little chairs that he invited us children to sit in while he and Rusty the rooster and Jerome the giraffe who he told their daily stories. I have a rocking chair pin cushion that makes me think of those days. :D They were an important part of Canadian children's television) Perhaps The giant could invite us outside the castle to have a weiner roast.
I have posted a link on my blog to your tutorial
You can find my blog here:

Then I come here & find them in pincushion size, LOL...too funny. I can see these vintage chairs lined up in someone's yard along the street waiting for the July 4th parade time to arrive. ReplyDeleteSEW cute! I could see those little chairs all set up to watch Ken propose to Barbie...in front of the Barbie convertible, parked in front of the Barbie condo, next door to the Barbie motorhome...I never actually owned a Barbie as a kid...I was deprived! ReplyDeleteI just joined as a follower of your blog. I can't believe how cute the little chair pincushions are. You are so clever to think of converting them to pincushions. They remind me of vintage times at the cabin on a lake in Minnesota. I think they should be used on a picnic table overlooking the lake for a party for like minded quilting friends.
ReplyDeleteI think the chairs are set up for a froggy backyard party.
ReplyDeleteNo one has to bring potluck--the smorgasboard of bugs show up uninvited to the pleasure of the froggy guests.
Fireflies light the way--they are spared for that reason.
Froggy relatives chirp and ribbit in the background, making it truly sound like summer.
If these aren't the cutest little pin cushions, I don't know what else could be!! They look just darling all set up and I believe they are just waiting on a miniature quilt show held on a nice summer day! I've been following your blog for some time and really enjoy it -- the music is fun, too! Thanks for the great idea on the pincushions! Julie stchsluv@aol.com
ReplyDeleteI love those chairs. I would put mine in my retro kitchen and put something in them as a display.
ReplyDeleteNow a follower.
ReplyDeleteI am a follower and I love your creativity! I have 2 of these chairs in the big girl size and now I have to repaint them and make some cute retro "tuffets" for them. These little ones would be perfect for boat watching on the lakeshore under a big bright colored umbrella!
