...while I was on holiday was this one. "Cherries in Winter" by Suzan Colon.
It's a book about cooking and families and learning from those family members who came before us.
When Suzan got the idea to write these stories, she was cooking meatloaf with her mother.
She had been laid off and had to economize, and her Mom suggested that she dig out her grandma's recipe file from the basement.
In the file, she found instructions for making good and simple food from many years of challenging times that her family had faced.
She started making the recipes with her Mom, and her mom would tell her the stories behind the recipes.
I won't say more because I don't want to spoil the read for you...but let me just say that I really really liked this book.
If I had to say the moral of the story in one sentence it would be...
"Just because you're broke...it doesn't mean you're poor."
A good lesson to learn:)
Good Morning Lori.

oooh, this sounds just up my alley. I put it on my book list. thanks for the tip!
ReplyDeleteThanks for recommending a good read. I'll see if I can get it at the library.
ReplyDeleteSounds good. I think back to my childhood ... at the time I didn't know it, but we didn't have much money, but my mom always cooked and baked, and we had great times around the dinner table.
ReplyDeleteI love your book reviews! Thanks Lori :)
ReplyDeleteI just put it on my read list. Thanks! I'm always up for a good book recommendation. Hope to see you tomorrow if it works out.
ReplyDeleteDear Lori, I had to pop over to tell you how very much I enjoyed your childhood memories of LW. I could just picture your family dancing in the living room. But to think your mother took that extra step to create her own Lennon Sisters - WOW! you have absolutely made my day! What a fun memory! Your blog is such fun, I have enjoyed scrolling through past posts. Snowmen extraordinary! Cute as can be! I am so looking forward to your new projects this year! Happy New Year! Elizabeth
ReplyDeleteThanks for the recommendation!! I just requested if from my library. Should be here in a couple of days!
ReplyDeleteI need a good read!
I swear now that every single recipe I read in a book or magazine all call for garlic--garlic--and even more-- or it is red pepper this or that--my mom was a good cook and everything was soo tasty and she did not have to add all those "other" things to make it that way either!!!
ReplyDeleteso I will have to check this book out--thanks for sharing it with us.
Hugs, Di

Hi Lori (and other members of the hive),
ReplyDeleteWow--thank you so much for your beautiful review of my book! I mean, not only was it lovely to read, but you made it look so fabulous... I think this is the prettiest review of "Cherries in Winter" I've ever seen! :)
Many thanks for highlighting the meatloaf-making chapter with my mom. That was, for me, one of the best times of my life: the simple act of cooking and talking and just being with my mother. This is a memory that will remain in my heart for the rest of my days, and I'm so glad people like you can see how much it meant to me.
I'll post the link to your beautiful blog on my blog, suzancolon.net. Many, many thanks for making my day!
All the best and happy new year,
Suzan Colón
