New Butterfly Tutorial...

Last summer I jumped on the bloggy bandwagon with what it seems like at the time everyone else and started making this butterfly quilt.

I cut fabrics that I love from my stash to use for the wings...

There are many different color combo's out there in bloggy land that you can look to for inspiration like here - here - here - here - here - and here.
As for my quilt...I chose to use gingham (my fave) for the butterfly body's and a solid brown for the background.

I really like how the brightly colored prints look against the dark brown...

This is how some of the butterflies look together on my design wall....I still have a ways to go because I'm making a twin size quilt.

The butterflies are fun and very addicting to make... it's hard for me to put them away when I have to because of deadlines that I must get to.

I followed the tutorial from the always inspiring Mrs. Schmenkman (her quilt pictured above) which is fabulous...and now even more fabulous is that she has written a new tutorial called "Charming Butterflies" that she has adapted for using charm squares.
Thanks so much Amy...it's awesome!
I thought you might be interested in seeing it.

So girls...if you havn't started your butterfly quilt yet ....and want to have some fun along with everyone else...
...go on over as fast as your cute little fingers can click and check out Amy's new tutorial here and start making your own butterfly quilt now! I promise you will love it:)
xx
Lori

P.S. You can thank me for your new addiction later!

  3. Good Morning Lori. :o)
I was just looking at Nannette's butterfly quilt on her blog yesterday (which is super cute) and then to see your beautiful post this morning. I am dying over your brown gingham!! :o) I love gingham too. Your butterflies are just precious and I can't wait to hop over to the tutorial.
    Have a great weekend!
    Sincerely, Trish

  4. Hee hee! Thanks, Lori! I'm VERY glad that someone else finds these blocks as addictive as I do. It's like trying to eat ONE piece of candy or ONE cookie. Oh, I'll just sew ONE before I do my other stuff. WRONG! Twelve blocks later..... ;-) I adore your fabric choices. Oh dear, now I just want to go sew more butterflies. Have fun!

  6. I also jumped on this bandwagon a few months ago and did a tutorial on making them from charm squares, but somehow my measurements are different. Aren't charm squares 5"? The new directions will have them coming out to 5 1/2" wide or am I missing something? I cut my bodies 1" wide then the squares were 5" when complete...oh, I see she is making them bigger so she gets more background. It was a very fun and addicting block!

  7. Oh my this would have been so much easier than all the appliqued butterflies I put on my middle daughters king size quilt.

  10. Butterflies make me think of August. I would take some August heat right now as the high was only just above zero here today. Counting the days til spring!!! I love the tunes on your blog. Make me think of my grandma Goldie and the songs she loved and played on the piano in the 50's and 60's. :-)
