A Cakewalk and a Big Thank You...

As you know I havn't been able to post because I have just been sew busy getting ready for Spring Market...which will start in the morning for me when I teach at schoolhouse!
I'm excited and a little nervous at the same time because this is my first market...first schoolhouse and first fabric line....so wish me luck!
I have enjoyed reading you're sweet comments about my Vintage Dishes pattern...A big THANK YOU to all of you my sweet bloggy friends!...you are the best and I appreciate all of your kind words.

I thought I would show you another one of my newest patterns..."Cakewalk"...

I named it Cake walk because they remind me of all of the cakes lined up on the table for the cakewalk.

What is a Cakewalk you ask?...

We used to have a "cakewalk" every year as part of our towndays celebration in the small town of Herriman, Utah where I grew up.
I remember that my mother, grandmother, aunts and great aunts would all bake thier favorite cakes for donating to the cakewalk.
On the morning of the celebration, the first thing that my brothers and sisters and I would do was to purchase a ticket to enter.
I can still see all of the beautifully decorated cakes on the tables with a number beside each one!
We would try to guess who had made them and what kind they were.
If you have never experienced a cakewalk, this is how I remember it:
We would buy a ticket (proceeds went to the towndays fund) and stand in line
for the next available spot. (About 10 people would go around at the same time)
There were several pieces of colored construction paper taped to the floor
forming a large circle.

Alot of the papers were blank but other papers each had a number written on them that each corresponded with a numbered cake.
Whoever was in charge also ran the record player and as soon as the record started to play, we would "walk" around the circle, stepping from paper to paper until the record was stopped...and then we had to remain on the paper that we had landed on.
If we were lucky there was a number on that paper and we won the cake with the same number!
New papers would then be taped onto
the floor to replace the old ones and the cakewalk would continue with a new group of participants.
The process would be repeated until all of the cakes were gone.
We always came home with 2-3 cakes because we had a large family and all of us participated!
I remember that "Cakewalks" were also a part of our family reunions, school functions and church activities....all of them were treasured childhood memories for me.
Wouldn't it be fun to have a cakewalk at a quilt event or retreat?...how about a cupcake walk?
Isn't that a good idea?....I think so...
don't you?

If you are interested in purchasing my new patterns...Material Girls and Pipers have them now...I just delivered to them! Look on my sidebar to click onto thier websites...just in case they don't have them on the site yet, you can give them a call.
I have several more patterns to reveal and as soon as I have a few minutes I will show you more:)
Okay girls...off I go to market!
xx

  5. Wow! Fantastic patterns.. if the others are this great.. I can't wait to see more :)
I remember cakewalks too. We did them at our church. A little different though. When you walked around the circle they then drew a number and if your number was the lucky number you got to go and choose any of the donated cakes you wanted. Whooo hoooo! I think we used almost ALL of our tickets trying to get us a cake.

  7. Yet another fab quilt - good enough to eat!! Have a great time at market.

It's funny how you're talking about a cakewalk as a cakewalk over here is a fairground ride, an old-fashioned one, where you have to walk along a floor which is shaking and rotating up and around. I think I prefer your version!

  10. Wow, that brings back memories! Our 'homecoming' had a cake walk sponsored by the Legion Auxiliary. The numbers were spray-painted on a concrete pad. There were some specialties that the ladies brought every year. It was so much fun! Thanks

  26. Blogger is being weird - I'm sure I commented on this post last week! I love the cakewalk pattern, it's so cool! I wanted to tell you that a cakewalk in the UK, well in England at least, is a fairground ride. You walk along it and it shakes and wobbles, it's an old-fashioned ride. Think I prefer your version!
