Farm Girl Friday - Week 14!!! - New Companion Patterns Too!!!

Good morning cute people!

Today is not only the last day of July…

but it's also week 14 of our

 Farm Girl Friday's 

sew along…and I'm having so much fun:)

Turn to page 48 where you will find 

the instructions for our first block

Old Red Barn

Even though I already put two other barn blocks in the book…

they were larger and I needed to 

add a 6" and 12" size to play with and

 also for the sampler quilt!

I chose to use a quarter square triangle block

 for the door to imitate the "X" on a traditional barn door:)

In the book I show you my easy peasy method

 for making these quarter square triangles.

 It's my favorite way and always scrappy fun!

Next block up is 

Old Glory

on page 47

You know that I am proud to be an American

 through and through and so of course

 my Farm Girl book would not

 be the same without Old Glory…

farming is rooted deep 

in our American heritage:)

So today I have a

big surprise for you:)

Even though you already have 

a good amount of  

Farm Girl blocks in

 the book to play with…

(45 total to be exact)

I have a few more to 

add to the pile 

if you want them!

Meet Penny Pig!

I designed this new block last month

(along with several others)

for my students in my three consecutive 

Farm Girl Vintage workshops last month.

We had so much sew much fun 

with these new companion blocks

and I had so many requests for patterns 

from those of you who did not attend

my workshops.

So this week we have two of them ready

(Penny Pig is the first)

as a PDF pattern available at

I have given cutting instructions for Penny in 

both 6" and 12" sizes just like in the book:)

Here is the second companion pattern that 

I designed for my workshops…

 Apple Picking!

I made this Apple Picking quilt that finishes

at 48 1/2" square

which is a perfect size 

for the farm table

in my kitchen this fall!

and of course…

 I used red gingham for the border!

The pattern is for the quilt…

the 3 different apple blocks…

in both 6" and 12" sizes:)

P.S. I want to show you the quilt

that I made using Penny Pig and

 3 other Farm Girl Blocks from my book:)

I used my Farmhouse Lane setting

on page 128 of my book.

Instead of making nine 12" Farmhouse blocks…

I made nine 12" Penny Pig blocks.

Then in place of the six

 tree blocks in-between the houses…

I used 6" Sunny Sunflower blocks

and 6" crops blocks.

When you sew these together they 

measure exactly the same size as the trees:)

This is a progress photo 

in my studio back when I was 

 auditioning the placement of the blocks.

You can see that my book is opened 

to the Farmhouse Lane quilt page for reference…

along with other 

random quilty things in the background:)

I made sixteen of my 6" Apronstrings blocks 

and made the rows in-between the pigs and flowers

instead of the sixteen Welcome blocks

that I used in the Farmhouse Lane quilt.

All borders and sashing measurements 

are exactly the same as in the book…

nothing different at all…

just substituted different blocks.

Here it is right before quilting...

And here it is after

 the cute swirly quilting 

(but no binding yet)

at one of my workshops.

Farm Girl Friday - Week 13!!!

Oh my Heck!

I've been waiting 

impatiently for this weeks

Farm Girl Friday:)

I'm having so much fun

with this sew along 

and following

 everyones progress and

 adorable blocks

on my Instagram feed!

So grab your copy of 

Farm Girl Vintage

and let's get started!

First I want to show you

 what I did with my

 Milking Day 

block on page 45.

I love the scrappy squares that

makup the bottom of 

the milk can of this block...

And I used twelve 

6" blocks to make a small quilt 

using the County Fair setting

 on page 112

of the book.

But I also thought it would be

 fun to do another mash up!

I decided to work with

 this color palette

for todays blocks:)

Instead of cutting 

the "J" scrappy squares 

for the bottom of the can…

I cut 2 - 2" x 6 1/2" strips

and

2 - 2" x 9 1/2" strips

And sewed them around a 6" Mama Hen block...

And used that section for

 the bottom of a 12" Milking Day block!

I think Mama Hen looks super cute

on Milking Day…don't you?

And speaking of

 Mama Hen…

turn back to page 42

because she is our 

next block for this week:)

I made this large quilt for the book

also using my County Fair setting on 

page 112 of Farm Girl Vintage.

I'm not even kidding when I say that

 I could be happy sewing 

Mama Hen blocks every day!

So many different color and fabric combination:)

I decided to stay with my

 same color palette

and stitch another mash up 

Farm Girl block for you!

I'm making pillows

 from these two blocks

 and I'll be using the cute

 milk bottle print

 for the pillow backing:)

First I made a 6" Simple Star block

on page 61

of Farm girl Vintage

Then I cut a 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" strip for the top

and a 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" strip for the bottom.

I cut one more strip that measures

2 1/2" x 9 1/2"for the side.

These strips and blocks take the place of letters G,I,J and L

in the cutting instructions for the 12" Mama Hen block.

You don't need to cut

a wing (P) either.

The rest of the cutting is exactly the same as the book.

I just sewed the strips around the Simple Star 

and then finished the rest of the block

until I had these 3 sections 

and then sewed them together.

And here is my latest

 Farm Girl mash up block:)

Any 6" block will fit

 inside a 12" Mama Hen Block…

As well as the bottom 

of a 12" Milking Day block

YeeHaw!!!

Farm Girl Friday - Week Twelve!!!

Can you believe that we are

already 3 months into our sew along?

Time sure does fly 

when your having fun…right?

It still is not too late to join in

Because we still have

 3 more months to go!

There are a lot of projects

 to plow through

in Farm Girl Vintage!

Our first block this week is 

on page 39 of the book and is called 

Kettle's On!

On every farm there is usually 

some kind of kettle warming on the stove…

and traditionally the call for

 "Kettle's On!" means it's time to

eat... sit for a spell ...

relax and visit:) 

So way back when I was making my

 6" Farm Girl blocks for my book…

(the sampler quilt on the cover)

I posted this photo as a sneak peek

on my Instagram... as I do a lot!

Anyhoo…

When I looked at it 

from this angle I thought

to myself…

Those cherries would be super cute

 on the front of that kettle!

My Pie Cherries block is on page 54

and we will be doing that block in a few months…

but for right now…

I'm using it to make another 

farm girl mash up block for our sew along:)

Except instead of Pie Cherries…

I made a pair of blueberries!

YeeHaw!!!

I sewed a 6" pie cherry block and 

put it into a 12" kettle block:)

Here's how I did it...

I made a 6" Pie Cherries block 

exactly as the cutting and instructions

on page 54 in my book... 

and switched out the reds for navy's

to make blueberries for my kettle block:)

I used the same fabric for the block background 

(A-B-C-D-E)

that I used for my kettle.

Then from that same aqua fabric

I cut 2 - 1" x 6 1/2"

and sewed to the top and bottom.

Then I cut 2 - 2 1/2" x 7 1/2" strips

and sewed to the sides.

Now it's the same size as 

the (H) section for the 12" kettle block.

I cut the rest of the

 Kettle's On block pieces

and stitched it up!

I added borders around the outside…

2- 2 1/2" x 12 1/2"

and 

2- 2 1/2" x 16 1/2"

So that I can make 

another pillow for my kitchen:)

It will be so cute

 with my pillows from 

previous Farm Girl Friday's...

Baby Chick Pillow from week 2 

and my

Gingham Pillow from week 10.

Of course this means that any of my

 6" farm girl blocks will fit 

into my 12" Kettle's On block:)

How about a Mama Hen teapot…

or Fresh Pears or Farmhouse?

A whole quilt of 

6" blocks inside the 12" kettles

would be super cute!

That's another farm girl project

 that goes on my to do list:)

Okay…now onto our next block for this week

Kitchen Window

on page 41 in my book.

I wanted to include a block that looked 

similar to a window pane and sashings. 

It brings back sweet childhood memories

 of doing the dishes with my sisters.

We had a large window above our kitchen sink:)

 I would look out the window overlooking our back pasture

where we kept the sheep. 

Over to the left was the barn where we kept our

 milk cow "BOSS" and also our pigs.

The horses were back in the very farthest pasture

to the right.

I loved watching out that window as I worked…

 and could often see

my dad on the tractor or my brothers

doing the "outside chores"

and couldn't wait until the dishes 

were done and I could get out there too!

I LOVED growing up on a farm:)

I designed this block to be another super scrap busting block.

I decided to make several 6" blocks using my

2 1/2" squares and my 1 1/2" strips baskets.

I grabbed a cute text background from my

 stash to use for all of the blocks.

I sewed four  2 1/2" squares together and

 then trimmed them to the size 

needed for the 6" block centers:)

That saves time so that I didn't need

 to trim them down individually!

This is a super simple and super fast 

block to make and in no time at all…

I had whipped up nine 6"

Kitchen Window blocks:)

I'm not finished yet…

I'm going to be making several more!

I think they would be cute as a small 

Harvest Tablerunner on page 124 in my book

and also as a fun quilt.

Then I got to thinking again... 

It would be fun to mix the 

12" size with the 6" size for another

 super fun scrappy happy farm girl quilt! 

I haven't decided on the setting yet

but I like how this is looking:)

Okay…

I guess thats it for me on
