"PERCY"
Welcome to week two of the
"CHICKEN SALAD"
Sew Along!
Join me here each week
when I will be doing a tutorial
for one of the 12 chicken blocks
for the quilt.
Of course because we are sewing
from all around the world
we all have different time zones...
But I will be posting each Monday
right here on my blog
and you can follow my tutorials
any time each week that
is convenient for you.
We are making the
Chicken Salad Quilt
64" x 80"
Please sew at your own speed ...
whenever your time allows
so that you can enjoy
each step of this sew along.
Quilting should be fun and not stressful:)
The schedule in the front of the
sew along guide is simply the schedule
to let you know which block tutorial
that I am doing for that week.
If you are not able to do it that week
please remember that these tutorials
will remain on my blog forever:)
I am also using an additional
Chicken Salad Quilt Kit
to make a second quilt
out of my Cook Book fabric
using twelve 12" Farm Girl Blocks from my
Farm Girl Vintage Book
and my
Farm Girl Vintage 2 Book.
It makes me sew happy to find out
that so many of you are making
a second quilt along with me!
COOK BOOK KITCHEN QUILT
and show and tell mine as part of
each weekly blog post
each Monday here on my blog.
Last week I made my
KETTLE'S ON!
Farm Girl Block
Each quilt is made with my newest fabric
collection called COOK BOOK...
If you are looking for a fabric kit...
just do a quick google search for
"Chicken Salad Quilt Kit"
to find shops who still have some left.
We are also using the
Chicken Salad
Sew Simple Shapes
I have already posted the
post which details all of the supplies...
and all of the cutting and
all about the sew along and how it works.
I have also given the link there
for the free PDF Download
of the Sew Along Guide
to read that post.
As per the sew along guide
cutting instructions
you should have everything for your
PERCY Block
all cut and ready to go!
If you missed week one and the
first introduction tutorial
I have posted that for the
Hattie Block
on my YouTube channel.
to visit my channel and watch the
tutorial and I hope that you love it!
Leave me a comment there and let me know:)

Okay!
Let's get started making
PERCY:)
all cut and ready to go!
I have also laid out the
squares and rectangles for the border
so that you can tell for sure
which prints they are:)
Here is a list of the
Chicken Salad
Sew Simple Shapes
needed for the
PERCY Block:
1 - M-2
1 - M-4 (reversed)
2 - M-12 (reversed)
1 - M-15 (reversed)
1 - M-26 (reversed)
You can see by the photo and description
that all of the shapes are
traced in reverse except M-2
This way PERCY is facing to the left
and it's super easy to trace in reverse
by placing the SSShape right side down
instead of right side up when tracing.
You can tell if they are right side up
or down by the printing on each SSShape.
You will also need to cut
the background 13 1/2" x 13 1/2"
and your straight bias strips
for the feet and beak 5/8" wide
as it says in the guide:)
ready to get pin-basted:)
Don't forget to clip all of the
cleavage and inner curves before
turning, shaping and pressing.
12 1/2" Trim-It Ruler is essential
when laying out each chicken so that
it does not "grow" too large for the block.
Use it again to trim the back down
to 12 1/2" square after you
applique and press from the back.
*The 16 1/2" Trim-It is for squaring up
after you have added the block borders.
*The 8 1/2" Trim-It Ruler is for squaring up
each border block after piecing.
applique:)
So far I've just been having fun
making each chicken and getting
them pinned and glue basted...
So I haven't appliquéd my blocks yet.
But I have decided that
I'm going to machine applique mine:)
I'll probably get started on the
applique part in a few weeks
and of course I'll take photos's
when they are trimmed up and the
block borders sewn on:)
Okay!
Now it's time to talk about which
of my 12" Farm Girl Blocks
that I chose to make this week
for my Cook Book Kitchen Quilt.
I chose to make
PIE CHERRIES
You can find the pattern on page 54
of my Farm Girl Vintage Book.
It's all cut...and each piece labeled
with my Sew Handy Stickers:)
I will be making 12 blocks using the
fabrics that I used for the
chicken appliqués only.
*Remember...all of the borders
for each block and for this quilt
are exactly the same as for
Chicken Salad Quilt
I'll be using the same background
for these blocks as well and of course
each one will be cut according to
each block's
cutting instructions from the book.
I love how week one and this week's block
look together
and both will be perfect for my
COOK BOOK KITCHEN QUILT
I hope you all have fun each week
making your kitchen block!
week two of the Chicken Salad Sew Along
and that you are having fun sewing and
playing with my Cook Book fabric:)
I'll be right back here on my blog
next Monday for week three
and the tutorial for PEARL
and the next 12" Farm Girl Block
from my Farm Girl Vintage Books!
xx

***********************************************
This week's favorite family recipe
is for of course...
another chicken dish!
POPPY SEED CHICKEN
(also known as Percy's Poppy Seed Chicken
as of this week lol)
It's a perfect casserole
to fix ahead for dinner
so that you can spend the afternoon sewing:)
Mom usually serves this over
mashed potatoes (reds from the garden)
but I have had it served over rice as well
either way is delicious!
Served with a nice green salad and/or
fresh veggies make a nice homemade meal.
And what about brownies for dessert?
PERCY'S POPPY SEED CHICKEN
*4-5 cups cooked and diced chicken
*2 cans cream of chicken soup
*2 cups sour cream
*1 Tablespoon poppy seeds
*1 cup fresh grated Parmesan cheese
*1/2 teaspoon pepper
*3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
*1 sleeve crushed Town House crackers
*1/2 cup melted butter
(mix with crushed crackers)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Stir together the soup, sour cream,
poppy seeds, cheese and seasoning.
Add the chicken and mix well.
Place into a 9" x 13" baking dish.
Sprinkle the crackers/butter mixture
over the top and bake uncovered
for 40 minutes or
until bubbly around edges.
Enjoy!!

ReplyDeleteI didn't think I liked chickens, BUT your chickens are so cutttteeee. and your fabric well it's perfect for me. So I'm making my wallhanging, (I have a small apartment) for my kitchen and the chickens will be hotpads for accents. What kind of batting do you use for heat protection? Keep up the good work. Cheri

Hi Lori. This is the first quilt along I have done. I am doing the applique by hand as this is my favorite form of applique. The chickens are quick and simple to applique this way. I fell in love with this quilt the first time I saw it. I am so happy it is finally here and underway. Thanks for your inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI have almost finished sewing and turning all my pieces. I have each chicken in a bag... how odd.. I am cooking chicken in a bag for Shabbat! But Lori's chickens are safe ... in my sewing room . far from the kitchen hee hee. I love this quilt and I love your applique method Lori ! Thank you for bringing it to the world !
ReplyDeleteI love your fabric line "Cook Book" and couldn't resist to purchase the fq-bundle. Also love your books and made many blocks already. My favorite block is "The kettle's on" Just want to let you know. Greetings from Germany, Claudia
