I thought it would be fun to join Eileen and Nanette and look up a few photos of my Easter dresses that I wore as a girl.
Here are a few photos of what I found but I'm not so sure that they were taken on Easter.
The reason I'm not sure is because I know that my sisters and I sometimes wore white gloves and carried small baskets or purses (with a new hanky inside) and sometimes we even wore hats on Easter and I don't see any of these in the photos-
but I thought I would share them with you.
This is a photo of my Dad and Mom (my mom is holding me) and my 3 older sisters, Debbie, Carolyn and Tammy.
This photo is unusual to me because I don't remember my Dad ever having a beard except for one year when I was about 8 years old he entered a beard growing contest along with pretty much every other man in town. The contest was for the annual towndays celebration one year.
The contest was announced in church on Sunday along with the rules. All of the men would start growing beards on Easter and the winner would be announced at the Saturday night festivities after the beards were all carefully judged and measured for fulness and length.
I don't remember who won but I do remember how funny it was for me to see all of the men in full beards in church every week, and I mean ALL of them, even the Bishop and his counselors. It seemed to last all summer but our town days celebration was usually the end of June.
I've showed this picture before on my Cottage Garden quilt post but I'm sure that this dress was an Easter dress and I'm sure that my Mom made it. Mom sewed most of our dresses and ALWAYS our Easter dresses....I don't know why Tammy is crying but I maybe took her flower?...lol.
Carolyn thinks it's funny and Debbie is following directions. All of our personalities are still the same today...haha!
Spring always meant a new dress for us girls and also my Mother. My Dad would buy her a corsage(which was usually an Orchid) to wear on her dress to church on Easter, Mothers Day and Christmas. He still does and also buys corsages for both of my Grandmothers since my Grandpas have passed away.
As we got older, Mom would take my sisters and I to Pennys or downtown to ZCMI in the fabric department and let us pick out our own fabric and sometimes our own pattern.
I have wonderful memories of that and I know thats where my love of fabric began.
Most of the time I would choose pink for my dress and obviously my Mom chose pink for me too because all 3 of my dresses here are pink!
By the way, for those of you who know me, do you think it's kind of funny that my hairstyle is still pretty much the same as it was back then? No wonder my Mom put my hair in rollers and stuck me under the hairdryer every Sunday morning - what else can you do with stick straight hair like mine:)
Hop on over (pun intended) to see Eileen and join the Easter Dress parade!
What wonderful photos! Your mother did a beautiful job on all the dresses. I especially love your oldest sister's lilac one with the bow. And what were you doing?.. stealing your sister's flower? I LOVE that photo! That could win a prize. Thanks so much for joining is. I really loved reading the memories that go along with the photos.. the story about the beards!
ReplyDeleteHow cute! Easter dresses are one of my very favorite things. You have inspired me to put mine up--I think I even have one with white gloves and a hat... :)
ReplyDeletea beard growing contest announced at church? hmm those days are gone. Funny though. Loved the pictures. They certainly look Easter to me with the pastels. Cute pic of you too with your fun grin. It is sweet to go back and remember little tiny things isn't it. Happy Easter.

Okay, it does appear that you stole Tammy's flower and made her cry. And for some reason it looks like Carolyn is really happy about it.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, that first picture of Carolyn looks JUST like Josie! I can't believe it.
I love when you post old pictures -I've never seen most of them. I hope you have a happy Easter. I love you!
You know, I dont know anyone really who did not sew back then...most all my dresses were made by my grandmother or mom as well. Your pictures were really cute! Such a sweet smile. Have a great Easter weekend.
ReplyDeleteI love the pictures. Such good times we lived in. Thanks for sharing!

ReplyDeleteI didn't know you came from a family if girls. Did you ever have any brothers? I came from a family of 6 girls (I'm the oldest.) Mom made all of our clothes too. We would go to Penny's and look for fabric.
