Vintage Monday...Rocking Chair Pincushion

As you all know by now, I love to go thrifting. And one of my very favorite things to do is find someones trash and turn it into a treasure.

The other day I found this old rocking chair pincushion for 50 cents.
Right away I could see the potential for something really cute.

Are ya diggin' the red velvet upholstery?
Well I wasn't either...so the first thing that I did was to take it apart...

...and get it off of there. The padding underneath was still good so I re-used it.

I primed the chair with KILZ and put a couple of coats of fresh paint on it.
"Raincoat Yellow" by Benjamin Moore.

I found some reproduction fabric from my stash that I thought would work perfectly and re-upholstered the pincushion parts....
and added pins and threadon the spool holders.
What do you think?
Did I manage to make a cute little treasure out of someone else's trash?

  3. That's wonderful! I found one of those too, and every year or so I re-paint and re-cover with the latest fabric. It's a fun item for the sewing room.

  4. What a cute redo! You have a great eye for seeing the potential. I know I would have just passed it up altogether, and missed out on a real treasure.

  5. Do you have me knocking my head against the wall. I come across those all the time in my antique travels and I never gave a though to refurbishing it! What a great idea. Now I won't let another get away from me!!

  6. I have the same exact chair. Bet they were made in a school wood shop class. Your redo turned out just so cute! I love the yellow paint and your choice of fabric.

You have given me the inspiration to recover my chair. Unfortunately, it is packed away and stored in a POD until we move. As soon as I get my sewing room set up after the move, that is one of the first projects I intend to do.
