Autumn Love - Turkey Pillow and Plaid Block Tutorial!!

Hi there:)

If you are doing the 

Autumn Love Sew Along 

with me and are wondering 

what the F30 

Sew Simple Shape is for...

this tutorial is for you!

I included it in the 

Autumn Love 

Sew Simple Shapes  

set so that you could make a 

fun Turkey Block..or two!

I made a pillow with 

one of the Turkeys...

I'll show you how I made two projects.

I used two different backgrounds 

and cut them each 12" x 12" square.

The Autumn Love 

Sew Simple Shapes 

that I used for 

ONE TURKEY BLOCK:

1 - F30 - Turkey

6 or 7 - F10 Feathers

1 - F5 Snood (red thingy lol)

1 - F8 or F9 Wing

About 12" of yellow prepared 

1/4" wide bias tape strip for legs:)

You know the drill!!! 

Sew...trim...turn...shape 

and press each applique.

Clip the inner curves and cleavage

 in the turkey shape and the wings.

Cut each leg about 2 1/2" long and

 press one end under 1/4"

Press under each end of the 

smaller strips and cut the other 

ends on the diagonal like this.

It will be easy to tuck those

 short end pieces under the leg 

because they are on the diagonal.

There are two ways that I've

 arranged the feathers...I love both!

I used my 10 1/2" Trim-It Ruler 

to lay out the blocks

 just like I do with the blocks

 in my Autumn Love Quilt:)

All ready for applique!!

After applique is completed...

I trimmed this turkey

 to 10 1/2" square:)

Now for the 

PLAID BLOCK

I designed this easy peasy block 

as a stash buster and to 

finish at 5" square...

making it perfect to fit around the

 Autumn Love blocks because they 

all finish in 10" increments:)

Isn't quilty math fun?!

The small squares in the center are

 Cut 1 1/2" 

and the outside squares are

 Cut 2 1/2".

You can choose either background

 from the collection...

they are each Cut 1 1/2" x 2 1/2"

I chain sewed a bunch of 

2 1/2" squares to each side

 of a background strip.

And then sewed a background strip

 to each side of the 1 1/2" squares

 and joined the three rows together

 to form a block.

I pressed away from the background strips.

Each block should measure

 5 1/2" x 5 1/2" square

 at this point:)

I sewed 12 blocks 

for the turkey pillow.

I made 2 rows of two and sewed them

 to the sides of the turkey block first...

and then sewed 2 rows of 4 blocks

 for the top and bottom.

I like how they look like plaid 

when sewn together...

that's why I named my block PLAID!

CUTE!!

Quilted and ready for a 

20" x 20" pillow form!

I always do an envelope back 

when making my pillows.

I've done several tutorials on this

 and also have detailed instructions

Are you wondering what I did

 with the other Turkey Block?

I wanted to frame it...

 so when I glue basted it...

I squished the feathers together 

a little bit and tucked them

 further under the turkey body 

so it would be narrow enough 

to fit inside of an 8 x 10 frame.

I added the Gobble Gobble! 

embroidery for a fun finish

 to the project.
