"BLOCK NINE"
Welcome to week nine of the
"PRAIRIE MEADOW"
Sew Along!
Join me here each week
when I will be doing tutorials
on the blocks for the quilt.
Of course because we are all sewing
from all around the world
we all have different time zones...
But I will be posting each Monday
right here on my blog
and you can follow my tutorials
any time each week that
is convenient for you.
We are making the
Prairie Meadow Quilt
68" x 85"
The quilt is made with my newest fabric
collection called Prairie...
I hope that you all have all
received your
fabric kits by now...
and that we are all ready to begin!!
If you still need one ...
just do a quick google search for
"Prairie Meadow Quilt Kit"
to find shops who still have some left.
We are also using the
Prairie Meadow
Sew Simple Shapes
I have already posted the
post which details all of the supplies
for the sew along and how it works.
I have also given the link there
for the free PDF Download
of the Sew Along Guide
to download the sew along guide.
It's very important to watch my
Week One/Block One video tutorial
because everything I show you in
block one pertains to all
the rest of the blocks.
Things such as tips on sewing...
shaping and turning all of your
appliqués as well as the entire
process of laying out the block.
I also explain about sewing
the scrappy background.

As per the sew along guide
cutting instructions
you should have everything for your
Block Nine
all cut and ready to go!
Everything is all cut...
all traced and ready:)
You can also see above the squares
and rectangles that
I used for the background.
Here is a list of the
Prairie Meadow
Sew Simple Shapes
needed for
Block Nine:
4 - N-18
4 - N-28
4 - N-43
1 - N-51
1 - N-55
8 - N-57
12 - N-58
You will need to cut
4 - 5" long
and
4 - 3" long
of prepared 1/4" strips
for the stems
that are cut
ON THE BIAS
because they are curved.
Block Nine shapes
sewn...trimmed and clipped.
Before turning...
you will need to clip the
cleavage areas in-between
each of the 8 leaves shown
in the front of the photo.
Remember to clip ALL the way
to your stitched line but not into it.
If you do not clip far enough it will
be hard for it to lie flat.
Use the seam roller and also your iron
in these kind of
areas just as I showed you in the
week one video.
The other shapes
do not need any clipping:)
All turned...shaped...pressed and ready:)
I pre-glued these 2 circles together
before pinning onto the background.
I pinned these shapes onto the
center of the background first.
The tip of the large leaves
are 2 1/2" down from the edge
of your background fabric
and the narrow green leaves
tops are at the seam intersection.
All 8 shapes surrounding the
large circle are tucked underneath.
I pinned and glued all of these
shapes down at this point.
Then I pinned the blue circles 1 3/4"
from the edge of my background
and centered between the seams of that
background square that they are placed on.
Next I placed the cherries.
I pinned the darkest cherry 2" in
from the edge of the background and centered on the seam.
I then pinned the gingham cherry
next to it on the seam about 1/4" apart.
The last cherry is pinned
1 1/2" from edge to the right
and 3" in from bottom edge.
Just pin these into place
so that you can tuck the stems
underneath on the last step.
Next I placed the double leaf tip
2 1/4" in from bottom edge of
the background and then
3" in from the right edge of background.
the other leaf bottom rests on the seam.
I glued the long curved stem underneath.
First I pressed the bottom end under.
The bottom corner of that stem is
2 1/4" from the bottom edge
of the background.
Because you cut on the bias
it will curve the way that you
want it to and still lie flat.
Tuck the other end of long stem
underneath the top cherry.
Now curve the shorter stem
between the two side cherries
like a smile:)and glue.
Trim length if stems if needed...
I wanted to give you
enough to work with!
Now glue the cherries and double
leaves into place.
I worked with one corner at a
time from this point on.
***TAKE NOTE***
the opposite corner is a
mirror image but all
measurements are the same:)
Using these sewn sewn seams
from the background
for placement makes it sew easy!
Once the second corner was completed
and I continued in the same way
for the other half of the block...
Until all for corners
were pinned and then glued:)
After a few minutes I removed my
pins and let my block lie flat
to continue drying the glue:)
That is my BLOCK NINE tutorial.
I love this block!
I call it my George Washington Block
because of the cherries and
the Baltimore Album style design...
it's very Early American:)
BLOCK NINE
all ready for applique:)
Afterwards I will
press from the back and then
I will use my
16 1/2" Trim-It Ruler
to trim down the block.
Now that we are 3/4 of the way
through our applique blocks
let's talk about the scrappy border blocks!
The cutting for each block is within the cutting of each fabric in the guide
and they are super easy to sew!
and diagrams within the sew along guide
and the diagram on sewing the
four scrappy borders
(and the sashing and cornerstones)
Here are my sample blocks to show you.
I simply used an accurate 1/4"
seam allowance and then pressed
my seams open and used the clapper
just like I show you in all
of my tutorials on my
I'm know a lot of you have
sewn your border blocks already
and have been putting your
quilt rows together as we go!
You can choose to save till
the end...it really doesn't matter:)
YaY!!
After making this weeks block
you can add it to the first eight
that we have made:)
I adore how they are all looking
so sweet together!
Thanks for joining me
again this week for the
Prairie Meadow Sew Along...
I'll meet you right back here
next Monday for the
Block Ten tutorial...
happy sewing!!
