Hello and welcome to the
Vintage Block Along:)
I'm sharing another vintage block
from my grandma's pattern basket
with you in the form of
another fun and easy tutorial:)
I'm using Farm Girl Vintage fabric...
And Bee Backgrounds fabric:)
When choosing fabric for today's block
I first chose the floral
and then pulled 3 more colors that were
in the floral ....then chose the
yellow printed background because
there was yellow in the floral as well:)
This vintage block has been very popular
for many years and of course grandma
and her sisters made several quilts
with this block.
It has "woodsy" origins and is
traditionally called Bears Paw.
I'm calling mine "Bear Hug" because ...
well you know...
we are talking about grandma's.
LOL
Grandma's give the very best
bear hugs ever!
(and grandpa's too)
You know...
I sure wish that I could
give both my grandma's and
grandpa's a big bear hug right now.
I love how all of these fabrics go together...
I'm all ready to sew but
first let's talk about cutting:)
From the background cut:
20 - 2 1/2" squares
From this print cut:
4 - 4 1/2" squares
From this print cut:
4 - 2 1/2" x 6 1/2"
From this print cut:
16 - 2 1/2" squares
And finally from this one cut:
1 - 2 1/2" square
Take 16 each of these squares
to make half square triangles.
Mark a line on the back
or use the
for instructions on adding
it to your machine
Trim off the excess and press open.
You should now have
16 half square triangles that
measure 2 1/2" square at this point.
Split them up evenly and
sew them together like this.
Take note that each set is
going opposite directions
so pay attention when
sewing them together....
ask me how I know lol
You should have 2 sets of 4
that each measure 2 1/2" x 4 1/2"
at this point.
Now lay the 4 coral squares
and the 4 remaining
background squares out...
along with the segments
that you have just sewn...
And sew them together like this.
You should have 4 segments...
That measure 6 1/2" square at this point.
Now lay the remaining pieces of
the block out just like a nine patch...
And sew it together...
easy peasy!!!
Your Bear Hug Block should measure
14 1/2" square at this point.
I love the addition of this vintage block
to the blocks that we have made so far.
Our vintage quilt wouldn't be
complete without it:)
Thanks for sewing vintage
with me again this week...
I'll be here next Thursday
with another really fun
vintage block for you!
xx

ReplyDeleteI am thoroughly enjoying this Vintage Block Along
ReplyDeleteSo pretty Lori! Can't wait to make this one, and can't wait to give my granddaughters a big bear hug like my grandparents used to give me! Thanks again for sharing. Blessings to you.
ReplyDeleteI am having so much fun with this! My grandmas were both such a huge and special part of my life, I miss them both so much. I'm excited you posted this block.. My husband's grandmother (who I also love dearly.. she is the one who got me into quilting ) just gave me a set of bear paw blocks she stitched together, and said I could finish it however I want. It was meant to be for you to post this block this week!
ReplyDeleteLori I can't tell you how much I am enjoying this Vintage sew along you are gifting to us. All of the stories and memories of your grandmother remind me so much of my own. I am thinking of both of my grandmother's through the making of this quilt. It will end up being a very special one to me. I plan on adding fabric photos of each of them somewhere on the back with a little dedication to them.
ReplyDeleteThank you so very much for your time and talent! I could make quilts the rest of my life with just using your patterns!
