Vintage Block Along - Winter Flower Block Tutorial!!

Welcome back for another episode of the

I'm sharing another vintage block
 with you
from my Grandma's pattern basket.

I'm using Farm Girl Vintage Fabrics
 and Bee Backgrounds

Last week I did a block called
Fall Flower and this week it's
WINTER FLOWER!

Grandma absolutely loved a
 Pink Poinsettia!
She always had one(a HUGE one)
on the round end table in the
corner of her front room.

On that table she usually kept
a beautiful doily made by her mother
and a photo of her parents
on top and a pretty candy dish.
But at Christmastime those were moved
to the bookcase and the giant
 Pink Poinsettia took it's place:)

Grandma also loved a beautiful
Christmas Card.
It was always a big decision which
design that she would choose
from the store each year.
Every time they were beautiful.

She enjoyed filling them out
 and sending them...
she had quite a long list
and it always made her feel good
 once they were all sealed...
stamped and given to the postman!

Grandma also received many cards
each year and she put them all
 on her fireplace mantel..
then hang them clothesline style
on string across her walls.

After the tree was taken down and
when the holidays were over
she would keep them in a big bowl
on the end table next to her sofa.

She would keep them close by to
read over and over and we
 would all read them too.
She would keep them there
until Valentine's Day ...
when they would be replaced by
all of the Valentines
given to her by friends and family:)

After that it was Mother's Day
and then her birthday etc.
Grandma really loved the tradition
of picking out a beautiful card.
To her it meant that extra time taken
to find just the right one was
 thoughtful and kind to the
receiver as well as the giver:)

Are you ready to make your own
Winter Flower?

I used yellow for my center
but it would look pretty in a
 lighter green as well!
I chose red for the center
of petals and pink for the petals.

From the background you will need to cut:
4 - 1 1/2" x 3 1/2"
4 - 1 1/2" x 2 1/2"
8 - 1 1/2" squares
8 - 1 1/4" squares

For the center cut:
1 - 2 1/2' square

For center of petals cut:
8 - 1 1/2" squares

For the petals cut:
4 - 2 1/2" x 3 1/2"
4 - 2 1/2" squares

First step is to grab the pink rectangles
 and sew easy corner triangles
onto each corner.
The easy corner triangles are
 1 1/2" squares.

Mark your stitching line or use the

This is what you rectangles
 should look like now.
They should each still measure
 2 1/2" x 3 1/2"

Now for the other pink petal squares
you will sew easy corners triangles
onto each side using the 1 1/4" squares...

like this!

They should still measure 2 1/2" square.

Now take the remaining background
rectangles and sew them to these
 pink petal segments...

like this!
These should now measure 3 1/2" square.

Now lay your pieces out and
sew them together like a nine patch.

So pretty!

This Winter Flower would be beautiful
 in any color...
don't you think?

WINTER FLOWER
should measure 8 1/2" square
before we sew it into our quilt.

You guys!!
We only have one more block
and it's an easy peasy one...
then we can start sewing our quilt together:)

I'll meet you back here
 on Thursday for that tutorial.

Vintage Block Along - Holiday Lights Block Tutorial!!

Hello again!
Welcome back to the

I have another vintage pattern to share
with you from my Grandma's pattern basket.

I'm using Farm Girl Vintage Fabrics:)

Just like the last block
this is also a 4" block
but we are making 4 of them and
sewing them together to make one block:)

This is a simple traditional vintage
block and I have added the
yellow corners because I wanted to
make the little lights look like
they are glowing bright for
 the holiday season.

I've named this block
HOLIDAY LIGHTS

Remember when the lights came in boxes
like this and they were so large
compared to the lights now?

I remember these kind too...
my mom still has some of them!

At our house growing up...
as soon as Thanksgiving was over
the first thing on the list was
turning on the Christmas Lights
and that meant at Grandma's house too!

My Dad and Uncles and cousins
would all hang the lights
on Grandma's house
and then...

They would bring up all of the
decorations, ornaments and the tree
from Grandma's basement.
Grandma had a tree made of tinsel
and it pink and silver!
All of us grand daughters
would help her decorate.
After the decorating was completed
of course we all had pie:)

All of grandma's ornaments were
precious to her and she had
collected them over the years.
They were all so beautiful
and fragile and sweet.

I always think of her when I
hang my own vintage ornaments
 that I've also collected...
some came from her:)

And the same goes for vintage tree toppers...
Grandma's were similar to these.
I sure do love me a good vintage Christmas!

Are you ready to make your
 Holiday Lights Block?

Before we get started let me
fill you in about today's block.

Besides the 4 blocks that
we will sew together into one...
we will also need just a single
 Holiday Lights Block
to go in another part of our quilt.

I made mine scrappy and it's the one
that I'm going to show you how
to make for the tutorial.

I cut for all 5 blocks at the
same time and they are here
on my design board...

I'm just going to tell you
cutting for the ONE scrappy block:)

From the background cut:
4 - 1 1/2" x 2 1/2"
4 - 1 1/2" squares

For the corners cut:
4 - 1 1/2" squares

From the colored prints:
if they are all the same print
 you would cut:
4 - 1 1/2" x 2 1/2"
in this case I cut a
1 1/2" x 2 1/2"
of FOUR different prints.

This block is super easy and fun to make.

 I have all
of the pieces for one block...
and now to take them over
 to the sewing machine!

First step is to sew the print rectangles
to a background rectangles.

Next you will sew a background
easy corner triangle to the top
of the print rectangles
 and then a gray print
easy corner triangle onto the
top of the background rectangle.

Mark a line or use the

Easy peasy!
Each segment should
measure 2 1/2" square.

Turn them like this and
sew them together to make your block.

Fun and done!!
Your block should measure 4 1/2" square.

Here's the back of my block:)

Now that this one is completed
you can whip up the other four!

Sew them together:)
I decided to use medium and
 dark tones of each color
in these blocks and I love
how it turned out...
I hope you do too!

HOLIDAY LIGHTS
should measure 8 1/2" square
before we sew it into our quilt...
and that time is getting closer!

Thanks so much for
sewing vintage with me today...
I'll meet you right back here
 on Thursday for another block
 from me and my Grandma:)
