Kassidy learns to crochet...

In my last post where I showed you my pillowcases...I said that Kassidy thought they were so cute that she was totally motivated to learn how to crochet...

She really likes to make things for her room and I had already given her one of the pillowcases....so she decided to make a "dresser set" instead...

...so on one of our "Sew Nights with Kass"...she picked out some fabric from her stash...

...the main print for the top...

...an orange polka dot for the back....

...because she didn't have enough orange, she also chose
this green for the back of the small ones...

...I cut them out for her and then she pinned them together and stitched away...

...with Right sides together...she also left an opening and then turned RSO...

...pressed them and then topstitched... (the top stitching also sewed the opening closed)...

I taught Kassidy how to prepare the edges for crochet by doing a buttonhole stitch with the yarn just like I did for the pillowcases...

...she had to cut the yarn pretty long so she used her teeth to hold the needle because it took both hands to pull each stitch through smoothly...she learned that from me too!

Then it was time for the crocheting lesson...

Here she is crocheting for the first time...concentrating on her stitch count and not pulling too tightly...

She watched her favorite TV shows as she worked on them over about a weeks time...

And now they are here on her vintage dresser that I bought for her on her 8th birthday...she calls it her "beauty table".
Her beauty table is where she sits to put on her jewelry...fix her hair...put on lip gloss...or any other primping....lol
She keeps all of her "beauty supplies" in the drawers and all of her jewelry on top.

She made a large one for the center and a small one for each side...

Dresser sets were made by our Mothers and Grandmothers to go on thier "beauty tables" back in the day...
they were either doilies or made with fine linen with beautiful crochet edges along with elegant embroidered designs...Kassidy's dresser set is a simplified version of the vintage dresser sets.

They just look adorable in her room ...and I am so proud of her...she did a fantastic job!
It was the perfect project for her to learn on because the crochet pattern was very easy and fairly quick for her so that she didn't get bored with it.
Also...knowing that she had a place picked out for them to go helped to keep her motivated.
What do you think of Kassidy's first crochet project?

Crochet Edge Pillowcases ...

Back in March I came across a really fun tutorial by Cassie on crochet edge pillow cases. It really made me want to get my crochet hook out which I hadn't done in a while.

When I was a little girl, my grandma taught me how to crochet several things and I have done so every now and then throughout my life and enjoyed every minute of it....

However, back then I was much too impatient to learn how to read crochet instructions properly and I just wanted to be shown how.

Well, I'm still the same today when it comes to crocheting and that's why I love Cassie's tutorial so much....

I made 4 pillowcases....

They were so easy and so much fun...I highly recommend that you try it!
It felt good to be crocheting again and I have been doing several little projects since which I will show at another time....
but in the meantime....hop on over to see Cassie's fabulous tutorial on her cutie pie blog "You Go Girl"....
Cassie has 4 parts to her tutorial...
week 1 - ready to rumble...which lists all of the supplies needed
week2 - posh pillowcase...which gives fabulous sewing instructions for the pillowcase
week3 - firm foundation...which shows you how to prepare the edge for crocheting
week4 - crochet like crazy...which of course shows you how to crochet
All of these tutes are on her sidebar under the title "on the edge tutorials"
I promise that you won't be sorry for the visit...she has a fabulous blog.
My Kassidy fell in love with it too and she asked me to teach her to crochet...so I did....she didn't make pillowcases but I will show you in my next post what she did make.
Thank you Cassie for a really fun project...I had a blast making them and I'm sure I'll make even more...because now I'm addicted!
