We are making the
Calico Garden Quilt
90" x 90"
The quilt is made with my latest fabric
collection called Calico...
I hope that you all have all
received your templates and
fabric kits by now...
and that we are all ready to begin!!

As per the sew along guide
cutting instructions
you should have everything for your
Hollyhocks and Rake and Shovel Blocks
all cut and ready to go!

Let's do the Hollyhocks first and then
we will move on to the Rake and Shovel:)
Here is my Hollyhocks Block Kit.
Everything is all cut...
all traced and ready to go!
Here is a list of the
Calico Garden
Sew Simple Shapes
needed for this block:
7 - O-1
5 - O-2
3 - O-3
7 - O-4
3 - O-5
2 - O-55
You will also need to cut
and prepare 1/4"
straight bias strip for the stems:
1 - 19" long
1 - 15" long
Cut your background
10" x 24"
as it says in the guide
and press it in half for
centering the stems
when pinning and glue basting:)
This is what the leaves look like all sewn...shaped...turned and pressed:)
Bee sure to clip the two cleavage areas
in each one before turning.
I thought I would separate each
circle according to size and print
so that it may help to
eliminate any confusion.
The three O-5 are across the top and
the seven O-4 are on the bottom.
The three O-3 are on top...
Five O-2 are in center and the
seven O-1 are on the bottom.
Okay...grab your stems...
leaves and background and
let's go over to the worktable!
I'm using two medium Design Boards
for pinning and glueing this tall block.
***NOTE***
Because Im giving you these
particular measurements for
laying out this block...
It is very important that your
background is cut exactly 24" tall
and that your stems are
exactly 19" and 15" long.
I drew two lines for my stem placement
and glued my stems centered on my lines.
I measured 2 1/2" up from the bottom
of my background and 1 1/4" from the
center crease and drew the lines.
The one on the right is the 19" stem
so I drew the line exactly 19" tall.
The one on the left is 15"
so I drew my line 15" tall.
The drawn lines are 2 1/2" apart...
note that in this photo
my stems are just placed to
the outside of each drawn line
and now it's time to glue them
down the center of the drawn line...
Like this.
Space between the two stems
should now measure 2 1/4"
Now let's start placing the circles!!
Start from the bottom up...
because thats how hollyhocks grow lol
Measure up 2 1/2" from the bottom
of the right stem and pin the
flower overlapping halfway into the stem.
On the left measure 2 3/4" up and do
the same thing with that flower.
These two bottom large flowers
together should measure 7 1/2" wide.
There's one more large flower
so I just pinned it in
between a little bit higher.
I also pinned the two small flowers
at the top of each stem...
overlapping those stems
a little less than 1/4".
(you will see those in the next photo)
Now that the top and bottom flowers
are set into place (do not move them)
you can fill in
all of the other flowers in between.
You will start with the next size
circles and work your way up
using the graduating sizes...
I just stuck a pin in each circle
as a temporary placement so that
I could easily adjust as I filled
them all in and made them fit
in-between the top and bottom flowers.
Your in-between circles do not need
to be placed exactly where mine are
just pin them where they fit
and what looks good to you!
Hollyhocks are ready to be Sue Glued:)
We will not be able to glue or applique
the leaves onto the bottom of the stems
until that section of the quilt is
sewn together (just like the hens and
the root veggies) but we can glue the
leaves together like this so
that they measure 7 1/2" wide.
I just pinned mine on so that
you could see what they look like:)
See on the finishing pages in the
guide how the leaves overlap on top
of the grass below them:)
Back of the leaves after they are glued.
My hollyhocks at tallest point on the
right measures about 21 1/2" tall.
This measurement doesn't really matter
because you will obviously applique
your flowers and stems and then trim up
your block but I thought I would show
you anyways just for reference.
All pinned and glued!!!
After applique I'll use my
Trim-It Rulers and trim up my block to
8 1/2" x 22 1/2"
and sew it onto the left side of the
Potting Shed (after week eleven)
When I trim I'll leave 1" background
above the top of the flowers.
The leaves will be appliquéd later!
Your hollyhocks are planted...
now let's make a Rake and Shovel!
Here is my Rake and Shovel Kit.
Everything is all cut...
all traced and ready to go!
Here is a list of the

needed for this block:
1 - O-70
1 - O-71
1 - O-72
1 - O-73
1 - O-75
You will also need to cut
and prepare 1/2" straight bias
strips for the handles:
1 - 10" long and press both ends
under to finish at 8 3/4"
1 - 8" long
You will also need to cut
and prepare 1/4" straight bias
strips for rake:
8 - 2 1/2" long
and then press each one in half.
Cut your background
9" x 16"
as it says in the guide
and press it in half for
easier placement
when pinning and glue basting:)
After sewing your shapes...
remember to clip the inner curves
on the rake before turning.
Shaped...pressed and ready to go!
Let's get started with the shovel first:)
Measure 1 1/2" up from the bottom
of the shovel and glue the handle.
Make sure it is in the center.
This is the handle that I
had you press both ends under.
It should measure 8 3/4" long.

The entire length of the
shovel should measure 13" long:)
Now glue the background shape
onto the handle center.
Now let's pin and glue it.
Placement:
Center the length of the
shovel onto the background.
Place the side of the handle 1 1/2" away
from the center crease that you pressed.
Now onto the rake!
Glue all of the 8 rake tines
that I had you press in half together.
Place your 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" Ruler
on the bottom edge of your Design Board.
Now measure 3/4" up from that
and pin the rake bottom into place.
This is set up as a guide to glue
your rake tines into place evenly
and all at the same length
which is 3/4" of an inch.
Place a dot of glue onto two tines.
(folded end of tines should be at the bottom)
Now tuck underneath the rake
glueing into place and pin.
Pin the remaining 6 tines into place
at the bottom spaced evenly apart.
Add another pin onto each tine
to keep them straight and un-pin
the rake and pull it out of place
so that you can add glue
at the top of each tine.
Now put the rake back into place
on top of the tine ends and pin.
Let it dry and it's ready for the handle!
Glue handle underneath the
rake and then measure 6 1/2" up...
And glue the red handle top.
YaY!
You have a rake:)
Now let's pin it and glue it
onto the background.
The end of the rake handle should be
even with the point of the shovel.
The space between the two handles
should measure 2 1/4" apart.
Use your pressed center line to make sure
and keep the handles straight.
Pin the rake and glue into place.
RAKE and SHOVEL BLOCK
all ready for applique:)
Afterwards I will
press from the back and then
I will use my
7 1/2" and 14 1/2"
Trim-It Rulers
to trim down the block to
7 1/2" x 14 1/2"
before I sew it into the quilt segment.

help you when making this weeks blocks:)
