Comforts of Home - the border

This is what I've been working on in my studio this week. Designing and preparing the borders to applique for my "Comforts of Home" quilt.

I'm really having alot of fun with it!

All of the scallops have been basted and are all ready to applique. First, I stitched a green stop border around the outside of the blocks.

I layed the quilt out on my livingroom floor after I prepared the borders to "audition" the design and my fabric choices just to make sure that I LOVE it before I proceed.

I am going to stitch butter yellow ric-rac tucked into the binding, so I also audition the ric-rac and binding fabric at the same time.

The corners will be appliqued last, after all of the borders have been appliqued and stitched to the quilt to ensure that they line up correctly to the scallops on each side of them.
I always leave the freezer paper on until I'm ready to applique to keep the marked piece flat and to keep the shape from distorting.
I took this photo standing upstairs from my kitchen which overlooks the livingroom.
I like to audition all of my quilts there on the floor so that I can see them from a different perspective. It really helps!
After all of the scallops are appliqued, I will be adding even more applique on TOP of the scallops, using all of the colors that have been used in the quilt.
I will show you that a little later.....

Love your quilt! I used to audition my quilts that way, but then we built a loft and put in a floor. So there's no more looking down from above anymore. I miss it, but the new room is worth it! I've got my own dedicated sewing space now. A good trade off.

I absolutely adore your quilt! Did you come up with the pattern yourself? I have been starting to applique just a little and would love to know the process you use. Especially on the scallops. I have a terrible time with the edges on shapes. Beautiful job on our quilt!

Duh...sometimes I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed. Of course you came up with it yourself! Sometimes I do so much blog hopping that I forget where I am! Please disregard that part of my post! ...now I'm going to go wash the blond out of my hair...

This design applique is so what I love, not that I don't like flowery designs but this stuff gets you excited to sew. Thanks for sharing. The scallops look great.

I love it! I really like the buttercream yellow. I've never done one of the scalloped borders before but I'm sure you will have detailed instructions. I can hardly wait....I just have to catch up on the last two patterns. Thank you so much for making me so happy!!!

Well Lori, now you have done it! I am officially inspired to continue applique-ing my blocks for this. I only have the letters HOME finished so far. I am obviously way behind, since I just picked up my 16th block-oy! Oh well, it will be so fun to make and now that I see the borders-I am even more in love with it.
Thank you for sharing and helping me get back into my applique routine!
