Sew Night with Kassidy

This is my daughter Kassidy. When she turned 9 yrs. old last August, she got her very first sewing machine.
Here she is the very first time she used it. She's a happy stitcher just like her Mom:) She has to sit on a cushy pillow to reach her machine where she feels comfortable. Her machine sits right next to mine and we can stitch together.

That same day, we went to the quilt shop and she picked out a charm pack for her very first project.
I showed her how to sew 1/4" seam allowances and she went to town, stitching the whole charm pack into a table runner for her dresser.
She's very independant and likes to do it all by herself especially the ironing. That girl LOVES to iron.

She raided my stash of leftover strips that I've had for a LONG time- um, let's say about 10 years now because these are leftover from one of the baby quilts that I made for her.
I just knew she was my long waited for daughter and started making pink scrappy quilts as soon as I knew that I was expecting!
I showed her how to do strip piecing on a foundation block. Of course I cut the blocks and trimmed them up after she had fun sewing the strips together. I'm just not ready to let her loose with a rotary cutter yet!
She picked out the sashings and post colors after she "auditioned" several. I think she knows that yellow and red combo are one of my favorites. This was harder for her to get the seams to match but she did a great job don't you think? (she used the seam ripper a few times until she was happy with it).
She made a big pillow out of the blocks to go in a window seat in her room.

On Wednesday nights, Mr. Honey and Sterling (my 12 yr. old) have a church activity so Kass and I always have sew night. When we sew, we watch icarly or American Idol or listen to music (her choice) she LOVES David Archeletta. It Reminds me of when I was a girl and had a HUGE crush on Donny Osmond ( I still kinda do ).
We usually plan a week ahead what we will do. Projects that we can finish in one night are always fun, like these tissue holders.
She made about akagillion of them for everybody she knows, her friends, her grandma's, her great grandma's, her teachers and even her Mom. Next she's going to make a bunch for her Aunts (my sisters) to give them next time we get together for our luncheon.
For a long time now, we all get together and have a potluck lunch at Grandma's house on the last Saturday of every month.

We really have a good time together and she is so fun to be around. We laugh alot and we shop for fabric alot. Here she is happy with a purchase at a quilt shop. She is definitly my partner in crime when it comes to fabric!! (and chocolate).....

You must be so happy to have her by your side sewing and chatting.
I love the idea!

your daughter did a lovely job. I wish I knew how to put sashings like she did. They really pop and make the pillow come alive.

What a cutie! She can come to my house and iron any time she needs more to do.
I'm actually jealous. Out of 3 daughters, no one wants to get near a sewing machine.

What a sweet story....It sounds like Kassidy wants to be just like you when she grows up. I think she is very talented too, she did a great job at choosing colors for her pillow. You are a great mom too.

Awesome, Kassidy!! You did a GREAT job! I love the colors that you chose! I am sure all your "ladies" will really appreciate the tissue holders that you made. I can't wait to see what you do next! Have you ever done a doll quilt? I used to knit blankets for my dolls when I was your age.

How fun is that! Both my daughters enjoy sewing, but I've never put aside a time to sew with them or thought to make it fun with the TV or music! I love the idea of finding finish in one day projects as well. What an inspiration, you've given me so many great ideas to try with my daughters as well.
Cheers,
Dionne
PS - Kassidy is a DOLL, she is so cute! My middle daughter is the same age, and, it seems, shares the same taste in music and television shows!

How wonderful that you and Kassidy can share your passion. And she's quite gifted... just like her mom!

PS... I had a mad crush on Donny Osmond. And that was just last week! Ok, so my crush never went away, and he's as darling as ever.

That is so cute--I can't wait until one of my kids (I don't care which one frankly...) wants to join me--that will be so fun! Well, I guess they want to join me now--but they're still kinda little--in a few years they can help without me having to babyproof first :)

I loved reading about your quilting with your darling little daughter. You are amassing some just absolutely precious memories together with your sewing nights. My daughter doesn't sew anymore, but eons ago when she was in high school I remember we stayed up until two in the morning getting her dress done for Easter. I can still see the fabric. I have three beautiful granddaughters and none of them sew although the youngest one and I did play around with it a lot when she was small. Enjoy every minute - they grow up so all of a sudden!!

That is so great that your daughter likes to sew already. I know she is going to learn a lot from you.

Mom and daughter sewing nights sound like so much fun! Kassidy is just so cute and happy working there at her machine. She did a beautiful job on that pillow - love the colors! By the way, I still have a crush on Donny O, too!!

She is darling. So sweet and cute. Just think. Where would we be without our moms teaching us to sew? How is that new grandbaby by the way?
