I showed you the front of my farmers wife quilt...
But what I didn't show you...
was the back!!!
I always planned on using the vintage seed catalogue print on the back...
(it's from Lakehouse fabrics and sadly is no longer in print)
Anyhoo...
When I went to prepare the backing...
I found that I didn't have quite enough.
(insert sad face here)
My grandma always said that
"necessity is the mother of invention"
And so...
I decided to "invent" a larger backing piece
by designing and piecing a row of
blocks into the backing fabric
to make it larger!
Because the quilt celebrates farm life...
I thought it only fitting to build a barn
around some 6" blocks!
YaY!
I have always loved barns.
Although I am not a farmers wife...
I was raised on a farm and so
I am a farmers daughter:)
I had so much fun building them and
I decided that these quilty barns would make an adorable quilt.
And so...
I got the idea that you might have fun building barns with me!
Yep!!!
My big announcement is ...
The Quilty Barn Along!!!
If you want to "quilty barn along" with me...
let me know and I will put the tutorial
for my barn block up...
along with a
Quilty Barn flickr group and a button.
Sew...how about it???
Are you in?
xx

My gramma said every year they would have to pick up the rocks in the field before they would plant!

At the center of my father's farm is a grand 100+ year-old red barn with the traditional gambrel roof. Red barns are symbolic of home so I'm thrilled with your darling pattern.

We do not have barns like yours in New Zealand. Ours is a very plain utilitarian corrugated iron structure, but the quilt could signify the rural spirit to me.

Oh Yes! Your row along has been so happy! A Barn along? Oh Yes!
Oh My Stars & Garters! There I was thinking how stinkin' cute your barns are and then you announced you Quilt Along. All I need to know, along with what appears to be about half of the rest of the Quilty World, is...how long do we hafta wait for the pattern to be posted?!?!?!?!
not anxious...not at all...not even a little itty bitty bit!
I love the idea of a barn quilt. Can't wait. Love your Farmers Wife Quilt.

0h yes ~ a barn along would be terrific fun! Love these little barns!
Love it! I'll give it a go.
You are just so stinkin' clever! I would love to learn how to make these. I even have the Farmer's Quilt book but have only made one block that I turned into a pot holder for my mom (used flippy corner cut offs that I had pre-sewed together before cutting them off) and made one of the basket blocks. I thought I was pretty clever doing only that :)
How could we refuse? Of course we're making barns together! :)
Ill definitely be trying to squeeze in some cute barns between due dates! Thanks, your fabric talents amaze me!
Would love to see how you constructed the barns, please do share! :)
I love the idea of a barn quilt! You are so talented. I found your blog about a year go and can hardly wait to do some quilt blocks from your tutorials. I Love to look at your blog and see what you have in store in the way of quilting.
