Vintage Block Along - Holiday Lights Block Tutorial!!

Hello again!

Welcome back to the 

VINTAGE BLOCK ALONG

I have another vintage pattern to share

 with you from my Grandma's pattern basket.

I'm using Farm Girl Vintage Fabrics:)

Just like the last block

 this is also a 4" block 

but we are making 4 of them and

 sewing them together to make one block:)

This is a simple traditional vintage

 block and I have added the 

yellow corners because I wanted to

 make the little lights look like 

they are glowing bright for

 the holiday season.

I've named this block 

HOLIDAY LIGHTS

Remember when the lights came in boxes 

like this and they were so large 

compared to the lights now?

I remember these kind too...

my mom still has some of them!

At our house growing up...

as soon as Thanksgiving was over 

the first thing on the list was 

turning on the Christmas Lights 

and that meant at Grandma's house too!

My Dad and Uncles and cousins 

would all hang the lights 

on Grandma's house

and then...

 They would bring up all of the 

decorations, ornaments and the tree 

from Grandma's basement. 

Grandma had a tree made of tinsel

and it pink and silver!

All of us grand daughters 

would help her decorate. 

After the decorating was completed 

of course we all had pie:)

All of grandma's ornaments were 

precious to her and she had 

collected them over the years.

They were all so beautiful 

and fragile and sweet.

I always think of her when I 

hang my own vintage ornaments

 that I've also collected...

some came from her:)

And the same goes for vintage tree toppers...

Grandma's were similar to these.

I sure do love me a good vintage Christmas!

Are you ready to make your

 Holiday Lights Block?

Before we get started let me 

fill you in about today's block.

Besides the 4 blocks that 

we will sew together into one...

we will also need just a single

 Holiday Lights Block 

to go in another part of our quilt.

I made mine scrappy and it's the one 

that I'm going to show you how 

to make for the tutorial.

I cut for all 5 blocks at the 

same time and they are here 

on my design board...

  I'm just going to tell you 

cutting for the ONE scrappy block:)

From the background cut:

4 - 1 1/2" x 2 1/2"

4 - 1 1/2" squares

For the corners cut:

4 - 1 1/2" squares

From the colored prints:

 if they are all the same print

 you would cut:

4 - 1 1/2" x 2 1/2"

in this case I cut a 

1 1/2" x 2 1/2" 

of FOUR different prints.

This block is super easy and fun to make.

 I have all

 of the pieces for one block...

and now to take them over

 to the sewing machine!

First step is to sew the print rectangles 

to a background rectangles.

Next you will sew a background 

easy corner triangle to the top 

of the print rectangles

 and then a gray print 

easy corner triangle onto the 

top of the background rectangle.

Mark a line or use the 

Seams Sew Easy Guide

Easy peasy!

Each segment should 

measure 2 1/2" square.

Turn them like this and 

sew them together to make your block.

Fun and done!!

Your block should measure 4 1/2" square.

Here's the back of my block:)

Now that this one is completed 

you can whip up the other four!

Sew them together:)

I decided to use medium and

 dark tones of each color 

in these blocks and I love 

how it turned out...

I hope you do too!

should measure 8 1/2" square

before we sew it into our quilt...

and that time is getting closer!
