Mercantile Sampler Sew Along - Week Three - Puzzle Block!!

"PUZZLE BLOCK"

Welcome to week three of the
"MERCANTILE SAMPLER"
Sew Along!

Are you ready to sew with me?

I hope that you will join me here each week
when I will be doing two tutorials
 weekly...every Monday and Friday.

We are making the
Mercantile Sampler Quilt
88" x 88"

The quilt is made with my fabric
 collection called Mercantile:)

We are piecing all 25 blocks
and then turning them into a
12" circle to applique onto a
 4-Patch Block background!

I detail all of the supplies
that you need to make the quilt in my
Bee Prepared post right here on my blog.

I have already posted the
 post which not only details
all of the supplies needed but
explains how this sew along works.
I have also given the links there
for the free PDF Download
of the Sew Along Guides

to download the sew along guide
if you have not downloaded yet.
to download the sampler block
 sew along guide.

As per usual for the first block in my
new fabric collection Sew Alongs
that FIRST tutorial is a video.

Because I now have my own
 I have posted the
 Birthday Cake Block

tutorial and I hope that you love it!

Today we are making the
PUZZLE BLOCK

Here's mine all cut and ready to sew!

Cutting each block will be super
simple because of the sew along guide
that is provided for you.

First step is to make the segments
that I like to call pieced flying geese:)
Sew the four "E" squares to the
 four "D" squares...

And press open.

Now we are going to sew
easy corner triangles onto the "D" squares.
You can mark a line from corner to corner
or use the Seams Sew Easy Guide.

Sew them like this making sure to
line up the corners before sewing.

Trim off extra using an
approximate 1/4" seam allowance.

Press seams open and now add the
easy corner triangles onto the
other side using the "C" squares
in the same method.

They should each measure 2 3/4" x 5"

Okay set these aside for a bit and
let's make the four flying geese:)

Use the "A" squares for
 the easy corner triangles
onto the "B" rectangles.

Sew one side first...

Before you can add the other side.

These four flying geese should also
measure 2 3/4" x 5"

Now we can sew the
four flying geese sets together...

Like this.
Press these seams open too:)

These segments should measure
5" square at this point.

And just like that we can
lay out our block on the design board
and sew it together just like a 4-patch!!

Back of my block:)

Add the borders so that
we can make it into a circle!

Like this:)

Trim it up...

Turn it for shaping...

And then press it:)

Sew your pieced background.

Line up the center seams of the
4-patch block and the center seams
 of the pinwheel in the
Puzzle Block for placement.

Pin into place and glue baste:)

My Puzzle block is all ready for applique!

After applique...
trim it down to 14 1/2" square
using the 14 1/2" Trim-It Ruler.
Line up the seams in the block
with the lines on the ruler
for easy peasy accuracy!

And now we have 5 blocks completed.
YaY!!

I hope that you will love
sewing YOUR fifth sampler block
for our sampler quilt...
and then turning it into a circle!

I'll meet you right back here
on my blog on Friday for the
Duck and Ducklings Block tutorial...
xx

I have 4 blocks done! Not using my Mercantile fabric but am using all my Lori Holt lines that are already starched & ready. I love all your fabric & can't wait to see this finished. Also working on Millie's Dresses at the same time!
