Thanksgiving at Grandma's Sew Along - Week Three!!

Welcome Quilty friends:)
Welcome back to my blog for week three!

We are making the
Thanksgiving at Grandma's Quilt
which finishes at
 80" x 96"
It has a pieced flying geese border,
several machine pieced blocks
and several applique blocks!

To make the appliqué blocks,
 we will be using my
Sew Simple Shapes called of course...
Thanksgiving at Grandma's!

The collection that we are using
for the quilt is...
BAKED WITH LOVE!!

Baked With Love was designed by me...
and produced and distributed
to quilt shops everywhere
by the amazing

If you would like to know everything about
 Baked With Love
to view both storyboards...
to see all of the fabrics close up
and to view the notions and ALL of
the patterns that coordinate with it:)

So let's chat about the
Thanksgiving at Grandma's
 Quilt Fabric Kit.

Several shops are stocking the kit...
both brick and mortar shops
as well as online quilt shops.
Just do a quick online search
"Thanksgiving at Grandma's Quilt Kit"
to find one.

The start date is today October 12th
for the applique block tutorials
but as I promised you in my
I did begin with
 the pieced block tutorials:)

Here are all of the pieced blocks for the
quilt here together here on my design wall.
Here are the links for each tutorial:

Now it's time for the
applique block tutorials and we started
them last week:)

***Take note that the schedule for all
block tutorials are in the guide
and I will also be sewing the applique
blocks in the order that they are in the

As usual for the week one tutorial
I did a video on my YouTube Channel
so that I can show you how my method
for Sew Simple Shapes works!

to go to my channel and to
watch my tutorial for the Maple Leaf
and Pumpkin Blocks:)
for the week one blog post

These are the week two applique blocks.
to read the step by step tutorials:)

Now let's make the next batch
of applique blocks for week three:)

Here are my blocks for this week all cut, traced and ready to sew!
Pies, Rolling Pin, Measuring Spoons,
 Cherries, Pears and Apples

***TAKE NOTE that there is a shape(X-15)
that is half of the actual rolling pin
size so when tracing it,
first trace the entire half size provided
then flip it over and trace the other half.

Okay let's go to the sewing machine
to get these shapes sewn!

Just like last week I'll be sewing
all of the shapes for all
of the blocks at the same time.

But before starting,
I'll divide them into
two different categories...

I'll start with all of the shapes that
have cleavage areas and or inner curves...

Such as the pie crust shapes:)

Alrighty!
All shapes with inner curves/cleavage
have been sewn and trimmed and ready
to turn, shape and press.

Now onto sewing the remaining shapes:)

Okie Dokie!
I just need to trim the approximate
1/4" seam allowance, clip the "X"
in the back of the interfacing ONLY,
then turn, shape and press.

Here are the shapes for the pies:)

And here are the rest!!
Now let's go to the work table
and prepare our blocks for applique.

I started by gluing the pie filling
to the pie crust like this.

Then I put it on a plate and
add a dollop of whipped cream:)

So sweet!

From the bottom of the plate
to the tip of the whipped cream
measures about 4" tall.

After applique I'll use the
5 1/2" Trim-It Ruler
for trimming the height...

And the 8 1/2" one for the width.

Repeat the same steps for the
other pie slices!

Next I laid out the rolling pin
which was easy peasy because
all I had to do was tuck
the handles underneath each end.

In total it measures about 19" long.

And each handle measure about 2 3/4"

Pinned and glued:)
Use both the 4 1/2" x 20 1/2"
Trim-It Rulers on this block
 after applique is completed.

Fun and done!

Now for the Measuring Spoons.
First I cut my four straight bias strips
and also glued the two circles
together for the "ring"

Because this block isn't symmetrical,
I really used my Trim-It Rulers to
help me to keep the shapes within
the seam allowance guidelines:)

Next up are helpful
measurements for you when you
are laying out your block...

Use the 6 1/2" Trim-It for the height...

And the 8 1/2" Trim-It for width.

Ready to go!

Now let's do the fruit blocks...
they are all easy peasy to layout:)

I pinned my cherries and leaves
like this...
remember to press both ends
1/4" under on the center stem
and the two side stems are tucked
underneath, so no need to
press those ends under.

This is a symmetrical block
and I used my 5 1/2" Trim-It
to help with my layout
and keep things straight.

Here is mine with the ruler
on top and centered
(this is how it will be centered
when I trim it after applique)
I took this photo to help you
when doing your layout!

Now for the pears...
laid out, pinned and glued.
***NOTE***
I just folded the stems
in half and pressed,
then tucked it under the top of pear.

About 4 1/4" tall from
tip of stem to bottom of pear.

After applique,
use the 4 1/2" Trim-It for width and
the 5 1/2" Trim-It for height.

Repeat for the other two pears:)

When laying out my apple blocks,
I pressed the stem in half
and tucked raw edges underneath
just like with the pears.

They are about 3 1/8" tall from
bottom of apple to top of leaf center.

The apples will be trimmed at
4 1/2" square after applique:)

Repeat same steps for the other 3 apples
and that completes the tutorials for
the applique blocks for this week.

***NOTE***
Remember that my schedule is not
YOUR SCHEDULE
 for making your blocks!
It's simply for the tutorials that
I am doing for YOU so that when
you are ready to do your blocks
 they are here for you,
whenever that may be.

We all make progress according to
when we are able so please don't ever
stress and feel that you are
"behind in making your blocks"
because there is no such thing!

Stay at a pace that makes you happy and
keeps within your individual time limit.

Okay!... with that being said,
here are this weeks blocks together
and all ready for applique:)

Thanks sew much for
joining me again this week:)

I'll meet you right back here
next Monday for week four
and we will "bake" even more blocks for
 our Thanksgiving at Grandma's Quilt!!

Until then...
have a Quilty kind of day:)
xx
Lori
