Thanksgiving at Grandma's Sew Along - Week Four!!

Welcome Quilty friends:)
Welcome back to my blog for week four!

We are making the
Thanksgiving at Grandma's Quilt
which finishes at
 80" x 96"
It has a pieced flying geese border,
several machine pieced blocks
and several applique blocks!

To make the appliqué blocks,
 we will be using my
Sew Simple Shapes called of course...
Thanksgiving at Grandma's!

The collection that we are using
for the quilt is...
BAKED WITH LOVE!!

Baked With Love was designed by me...
and produced and distributed
to quilt shops everywhere
by the amazing

If you would like to know everything about
 Baked With Love
to view both storyboards...
to see all of the fabrics close up
and to view the notions and ALL of
the patterns that coordinate with it:)

So let's chat about the
Thanksgiving at Grandma's
 Quilt Fabric Kit.

Several shops are stocking the kit...
both brick and mortar shops
as well as online quilt shops.
Just do a quick online search
"Thanksgiving at Grandma's Quilt Kit"
to find one.

The start date is today October 12th
for the applique block tutorials
but as I promised you in my
I did begin with
 the pieced block tutorials:)

Here are all of the pieced blocks for the
quilt here together here on my design wall.

Now it's time for the
applique block tutorials and we started
them last week:)

***Take note that the schedule for all
block tutorials are in the guide
and I will also be sewing the applique
blocks in the order that they are in the

As usual for the week one tutorial
I did a video on my YouTube Channel
so that I can show you how my method
for Sew Simple Shapes works!

to go to my channel and to
watch my tutorial for the Maple Leaf
and Pumpkin Blocks:)
for the week one blog post

These are the week two applique blocks.
to read the step by step tutorials:)

These are the week three applique blocks.
to read the step by step tutorials:)

It's time to bake the next batch
of applique blocks for week four:)

Here are my blocks for this week all cut, traced and ready to sew!
Turkey, Casserole, Dishes,
 Gravy Boat and Jars

***TAKE NOTE that there are shapes
that are half of the actual
size so when tracing those,
first trace the entire half size provided
then flip it over and trace the other half.

Okay let's go to the sewing machine
to get these shapes sewn!

As per usual I'll be sewing
all of the shapes for all
of the blocks at the same time.

I like to start with all of the shapes that
have cleavage areas and or inner curves...

Here are the shapes that have
inner curves or cleavage or both.
They are sewn and trimmed and ready
to turn, shape and press!

Let's sew the other shapes now:)

And here we go!
I just need to trim the approximate
1/4" seam allowance, clip the "X"
in the back of the interfacing ONLY,
then turn, shape and press.

Turkey Block shapes are all ready to go!

And here are the shapes for the
rest of the blocks:)

Time to go to the work table
and prepare our blocks for applique!

Let's start with the star of
Thanksgiving dinner...the turkey!!

I started by pinning and then
gluing the top of the platter onto and
overlapping the bottom of platter.
Height is a 4 1/2"

Then I placed the greenery centered
 onto the platter like this.

There is about 3/8" of the platter
showing above the greenery.

Now for the turkey!
I have taken many photos of my steps
of placement and adding in measurements to hopefully help you along the way
when laying out your turkey block.

I glued the paper frills on top
of the legs first before placing.

***SIDE NOTE***
Making paper frills to place over the
turkey legs right before placing it
on the table was a tradition
and us kids always looked forward
to making them!

The bottom leg goes on top of the turkey
but I placed the upper leg on top
just to show you placement
before i tucked it under...

Like this.

From the tip of the upper frill to
the bottom of the platter is 12 1/2"

Now for the wing measurments:)

Remember that these are my measurements
and yours do not have to match exactly,
I'm just taking photos as a guide:)
As long as everything stays within the
Trim-It Ruler window you are good!

The ruler sizes are listed in the guide
underneath EACH block,
and I also tell you here
on my blog because it's great info
to have while laying out your blocks.

Okay turkey is done!...
and now for the salt and pepper
 prep and placement.

First I glued the bottom of shakers
 overlapping the top like this.

I also pressed under each straight
bias strip so that they measure
just a bit over the width
of the shakers...

and folded over and be glued like this.

I measured up 1/2" from the bottom
for the widest strip then 1/4" up
before placing the narrow one.
I did them both at the same time
to try and keep them even.

Ready to place onto the block!

They are about 1/2" apart and that space
is centered above the greenery leaf,
about 3" in-between.

Use the 20 1/2" Trim-It Ruler to keep everything straight and within its window.
I'll use this size to trim up the
blocks width after applique...

And the 14 1/2" size to trim the height.

Okay!
Now for the cranberries:)

I started by simply looking at the block
photo in the guide and placing each one,
but just with a pin in each center
at this point and no glue so that
I can tuck the herb leaves underneath.

First one and still looking
at the photo for guidance...

Second one...

Take note that you can trim off the tips
of the herb leaves when needed
 for tucking under...
and with that being said,
You can trim of any parts of your shapes
that are tucked under if you would like.

That is a personal preference and
 totally up to you because
you are the boss of your own quilt:)

I personally enjoy the look
of the layers but where there are
many such as the cranberries and
leaves I do trim a bit as needed!

Continuing placement from left to right...

Then glue all of them down, after pinning
them where you want them to go:)

Yippee!
Your turkey is ready for dinner
and for applique.
So cute!!

Now let's bake a casserole
for our dinner.
I'll bet you have a traditional
family favorite recipe for your dinner:)

This block is simple and straightforward.
I tucked the lid underneath the dish
and then tucked the lid handle/knob
at the top, using my 15 1/2" ruler
to keep things centered and straight.
I'll use this ruler to trim the width
after my applique is completed...

And the 6 1/2" for the height.

Casserole is ready, so let's keep it
in the warming oven and set the
table with Grandma's dishes:)

I glued the plate centers on and the
cup onto the saucer (and added handle)
before pinning them onto the background.

The easiest way for placement for me was to simply lay the 16 1/2" Trim-It on top
and arrange according to block photo,
keeping within the ruler window.

After I was happy with placement I pinned...

And then glued into place for applique.

Okay!
Let's prepare the gravy for serving!

Pin and glue the center
of the handle like this:)

Then pin and glue the gravy boat
onto the background center.

After applique use the
9 1/2" Trim-It for the width...

And the 5 1/2" Trim-It for the height.

Ready to serve...
(and for applique:)

Let's prep the last blocks for this week...

The jars!
AKA homemade and canned by grandma...
jams, relish and pickles

I prepped these strips just like
the salt and pepper shakers,
pressing them so that they would
fold around the jar covers.

Pinned and glued:)

Then I glued the top to the jar,
the jar is 5" tall.

I placed each jar onto their
 background fabric and glued.
after applique,
I'll use the 6 1/2" Trim-It for height
and the 5 1/2" for width.

Ready for the dinner table!

Here are all of this weeks
applique blocks together...

We are almost ready for our
Thanksgiving dinner at Grandma's:)
I hope that you take your time
making your blocks this week so that
you can enjoy the process of each step.
That's what creating is all about!

Thanks sew much for joining
 me again this week:)

I'll meet you right back here
next Monday for week five
and we will "bake" the last blocks for
 our Thanksgiving at Grandma's Quilt!!
